About NewLingual

Reimagining multilingual education as a practice of cultural sovereignty

NewLingual exists to reimagine multilingual education as a practice of cultural sovereignty, intellectual empowerment, and community self-determination. We curate and distribute curriculum, facilitate institutional partnerships, and support research grounded in biliteracy, bilingualism, dual language education, multilingual education, and translanguaging.

Dynamic bilingualism

Our approach confronts the monoglossic and raciolinguistic ideologies that have defined language education for generations. We reject subtractive bilingualism programs that use native language only as a bridge to English proficiency. We reject additive bilingualism programs that ignore translanguaging and treat language mixing as error.

We promote dynamic bilingualism: an approach that reflects how multilingual people actually learn and use language within their sociocultural environments, and that treats every student’s full linguistic repertoire as an intellectual asset.

Liberation over assimilation.

Curation, distribution, and research

NewLingual is a nonprofit educational initiative that curates content, supports original research in multilingual education and translanguaging pedagogy, and facilitates adoption in school districts, universities, teacher preparation programs, and professional development settings. We work with content developers to ensure offerings align with our mission, maintain accuracy and integrity, and meet the standard of accessibility our work represents. Our platform is built to support additional content developers in the future.

A program of the Unbound Scholars Foundation

NewLingual is housed within the Unbound Scholars Foundation, an academic freedom nonprofit committed to four principles: structural literacy, academic freedom, cultural sovereignty, and economic agency.

The Foundation exists because education that challenges power has always needed protection, and that protection requires its own institutional architecture.

Poder Pedagogy

Our founding content partner. Poder Pedagogy develops the frameworks, curriculum, training modules, and books that NewLingual curates and distributes. A linguistic liberation company grounded in biliteracy, bilingualism, and translanguaging.
