Our Projects

The work we curate and the research we advance

NewLingual curates and distributes educational content and supports research for multilingual education. Our work spans two dimensions: education that builds biliteracy and translanguaging practice, and research that strengthens the evidence base for how multilingual learners learn.

Education designed for bilingual minds

Multilingual learners are not two monolinguals sharing a classroom. They are bilingual thinkers whose full linguistic repertoire is an intellectual asset. Our educational work equips educators with the frameworks, practices, and tools to teach accordingly.

For school and district professional development, we connect you with our content partners. Reach out to Poder Pedagogy for training.

Biliteracy, Bilingualism, and the Translanguaging in Between

Education designed for bilingual minds.

A five-course university certificate program. Each course builds on the last.

1

[Title TBD]

Foundations of bilingualism and multilingual education. How language works in bilingual minds, why monolingual frameworks fail multilingual learners, and the case for dynamic bilingualism.

2

[Title TBD]

Translanguaging as pedagogy. Moving from theory to classroom practice. Understanding how students use their full linguistic repertoire to make meaning, and how educators can design instruction that honors it.

3

[Title TBD]

Biliteracy development across two languages. How reading and writing develop differently in transparent and opaque orthographies, and what this means for instruction that serves bilingual learners as bilinguals.

4

[Title TBD]

Confronting linguistic hegemony. How raciolinguistic ideologies and assimilationist frameworks shape language education, and how educators can disrupt them through anti-racist introspection and advocacy.

5

[Title TBD]

Integrating stance, design, and practice. Building translanguaging pedagogy into the structure of programs and schools. Advocacy, leadership, and systemic change.

The certificate produces educators equipped to implement translanguaging pedagogy, develop biliteracy, and advocate for multilingual learners with the confidence that comes from a rigorous theoretical and practical foundation.

Building Power Through Translanguaging

Dual language education, biliteracy, translanguaging, and linguistic liberation.

A book-length work that provides the theoretical and practical foundation for translanguaging pedagogy. The intellectual backbone of everything NewLingual distributes.

The science should reflect the learners

The research that informs multilingual education has historically been conducted through monolingual lenses. Language mixing is understudied and undervalued. Translanguaging as a measurable skill remains underexplored. The science of reading, as commonly implemented, was developed for monolingual English speakers and applied without modification to bilingual learners.

NewLingual supports original research in multilingual education, biliteracy development, and translanguaging pedagogy. We contribute to building the evidence base that practitioners, policymakers, and programs need to serve multilingual learners well.

NewLingual is a program of the Unbound Scholars Foundation, an academic freedom nonprofit committed to protecting education from political, religious, and corporate interference.
